Stunell campaigns to end child poverty in Stockport
5.52.06pm GMT Mon 20th Feb 2006
This week, Andrew Stunell MP has called for a Government strategy to end child poverty, following a new report by Save the Children which reveals up to one million children in Britain are living in severe and persistent poverty.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"Save the Children's report makes worrying reading. It shows there has been little or no improvement in the proportion of children living in severe poverty in England in recent years.
"The Government does not even bother to measure the problem. The report shows that the Government has failed children most in need.
"I am demanding that the Government develops a strategy to help Stockport's most vulnerable children. Without a clear strategy to address severe and persistent child poverty, the Government has no hope of achieving its target of ending child poverty by 2020."
Save the Children UK Director, Colette Marshall added:
"People find it difficult to accept there is poverty in Britain. But the reality is that 1 in 10 children are experiencing severe poverty. We are pleased that Andrew Stunell MP has added his voice to the campaign."
