Stunell takes post office battle to Parliament12.00.00am GMT Wed 24th Mar 2004 The battle to save Stockport Post Offices was taken up in Parliament this week by local MPs Patsy Calton and Andrew Stunell. Mr Stunell challenged Post Office Minister, Stephen Timms to explain how the Government's aim of promoting social inclusion was met by closing sub post offices in Offerton and on the Cherry Tree estate in Romiley. Andrew Stunell said: "The Post Office should be giving a service. Instead we are getting the creeping corrosion of Stockport's community life. These services feed into local businesses and give older people and mothers with young children the chance to get on with their lives independently." In a further blow, Post Office Ltd have announced that the Macclesfield Road branch in Hazel Grove will be closing on7th April. Andrew Stunell added: "Rather than giving an average of £55,000 to each sub-postmaster to close up shop, the money would be better invested in expanding and diversifying services, in line with the Government's own Performance and innovation Unit report."
