Post office closures hit the most vulnerable

5.40.57pm GMT Tue 20th Jan 2004

The battle to save Stockport's doomed post offices has stepped up a gear with local MPs Andrew Stunell and Patsy Calton campaigning strongly for closure plans to be withdrawn for 16 post offices announced before Christmas.

Andrew Stunell said:

"These post offices are just business units to Post Office Ltd but they provide an important public service in Stockport. For some older folk the local post office make the difference between being able to manage independently, and being left stuck relying on friends and neighbours.

"It's outrageous that elderly folk and young mother without cars will now have to make long round trips to their nearest post office."

Post Office Ltd, wholly owned by the government has provided no guarantee that these will be the final round of closures.

"The government have been cloak and daggers about their plans to close local post offices for the past three years. Their sham consultation process has completely ignored the needs of the most vulnerable, at-risk people in our community, as well as the overwhelming desire of everyone to keep services local and accessible."

Andrew Stunell is urging Post Watch and Post Office to urgently rethink their plans. If you agree get in touch with him at Liberal Democrats, 68a Compstall Road, Romiley, Stockport SK6 4DE. ENDS
