Post Office closures damage communities - Stunell12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 7th Oct 2003 Local MP Andrew Stunell is pressing the Post Office Minister, Stephen Timms to rethink plans to close more post offices in Stockport and the North West. In this year alone, over 50 post offices have been axed in the North West, including 1 in Stockport. 2 more in Stockport are under threat with plans to shut down a further 30 in the North West. Commenting on the dire state of affairs, Andrew Stunell MP said: "For some people, these changes will be a huge inconvenience, but for many others having to open and operate a bank account will create massive problems. According to the evidence provided by the FSA consumer panel on financial exclusion, banks provide a very poor service to people on low incomes and those who have had problems with debt. "Closing more branches will only cause damage and disruption to our community. We must keep a critical eye on the government's closure programme. As principal shareholder of the Post Office, the government has a duty to meet the needs of its primary stakeholders - local people." "The needs of the most vulnerable groups are not being addressed in the Whitehall decision making process at all." ENDS
