Stunell urges a transport solution for Stockport

Alistair Darling, the Secretary of State for Transport, has agreed to meet a top level deputation from Stockport to speed up progress on the A555 road link between Bredbury and Manchester Airport.
His promise came during a question and answer session with Andrew Stunell in Parliament today.
Mr Stunell has been pressing the Government to cut red tape so that new roads and Metro trams can be built in Stockport. The transport plan developed through the multimodal study will result in a cut in congestion and pollution.
Andrew Stunell said: "Now the Government reshuffle is over, I want to make sure the new ministers at the Transport Department really grasp how important better transport links are for Stockport."
Commenting on Alistair Darling's response, Mr Stunell said:
"I welcome Alistair Darling's openness to a meeting with the deputation. Perhaps we can now get the ball rolling on a transport solution that will divert traffic off our local roads and bring huge benefits to local people and businesses."
